This month we will be covering search engine optimization and other marketing techniques. Listed below are the top 5 acronyms used in the industry.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) This is the act of altering a web site so that it does well in the organic, crawler-based listings of search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN. In the past, has also been used as a term for any type of search engine marketing activity, though now the term search engine marketing itself has taken over for this.
SEM (Search Engine Marketing) This is the act of marketing a web site via search engines, whether this be improving rank in organic listings, purchasing paid listings or a combination of these and other search engine-related activities.
SERPS (Search Engine Results Page) After a user enters a search query, the page that is displayed, is called the results page.
Meta-tags Information placed in a web page that is not intended for Internet users to see but instead passes information to search engine crawlers, browser software and some other applications. Common meta-tags include Title, Description and Keyword.
Spider or Crawler Component of search engines that gather listings by automatically "crawling" the web. A search engine's crawler follows links to web pages. It makes copies of the web pages found and stores them in the search engine's index.
