Technical Terms Demystified SMTP, POP, ICANN, ISP, Wi-Fi

This month we will be covering some common programming and marketing acronyms. Listed below are 5 common acronyms used in the industry.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
is the standard e-mail protocol on the Internet. It is a TCP/IP protocol that defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.

POP (Post Office Protocol)
used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server, usually from a user's individual e-mail client software such as Outlook Express or other applications, which are often referred to as an "e-mail client".

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)
Non-profit organization responsible for managing the internet's domain name system, including IP address space allocation. ICANN also coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root server system.

ISP (Intenet Service Provider)
A business that provides an individual or company with access to the internet. Some methods of providing this service are through dial-up telephone, cable, or high-speed DSL circuit.

Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)
To put it simply Wi-Fi is a local area network (LAN) that communicates via radio waves. A more detailed explanation is, it is the set of standards for wireless local area networks based on the specifications known as 802.11. It was originally developed for use by wireless devices and local networks. It is now used for Internet access as well. If you access the Internet wirelessly from your computer or personal digital assistant, chances are you are using some sort of Wi-Fi.
